The first step in risk management is to identify the risks that may impact your project. You may have scheduled the risk assessment meeting, but do not know where to begin.
Here are 4 risk identification techniques that will give you a head start.
Brainstorm
Begin the risk identification with a brainstorm to generate the initial risk list. Record all potential risks and do not allow discussion that may discourage creativity during this first session.
Expert Interview
Interview selected stakeholders or other experts to create the initial risk list that will be evaluated later in the risk management process.
Risk Assessment Meeting
Conduct a general risk discussion during a risk assessment meeting with key team members and stakeholders. Add risks identified during this meeting to the risk register for evaluation.
Historical Review of Similar Projects
Direct the project team to review the Lessons Learned documentation or history of similar projects to determine the most common risks and identify the strategies used to mitigate those risks.
