The purpose of the staffing plan is to make sure the project has sufficient resources with the right skills to ensure a successful project completion. Generally, the project manager creates the staffing plan early in the planning process.
Role Requirements
The staffing plan consists of a detailed breakdown of the roles required to execution the project and contains the following information:
- Role – a job title such as Tech Lead, Analyst, Architect, Developer, etc.
- Skills – a complete list of skills the team member needs to fulfill their role
- Responsibility – a description of the role the team member will be providing
- Number Resources Required – a head count for each role
- Expected Start Date – when the resource will need to start work
- Expected End Date – date when the resource is expected to be released, or expected duration in days, weeks, or months
Some Role Requirements may also include salary requirements that will be used in sourcing the resources
Role Assignment
The second part of the Staffing Plan is a simple Role Assignment table containing the following information:
- Role – described above
- Resource Name – name of the individual assigned to the role
- Rate – salary if internal or cost if external
- Source – where resource was assigned from
