What Does the Bible Say About Project Management?

Many people see the PMBOK as the modern “bible” of project management. It is internationally recognized as a go-to authority for all things related to the discipline.

But have you ever wondered what the Bible says about project management? I did—and decided to explore it.

Here’s what I found:

Vision

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”  Proverbs 29:18

This verse underscores the importance of a clear and compelling project vision. Without direction, teams lose focus and momentum. A well-defined vision guides decision-making and motivates stakeholders.

Budgeting

“For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’”  Luke 14:28–30 (ESV)

Securing adequate funding before launching a project is not a modern concept. This passage highlights the importance of accurately estimating costs before starting work—and the consequences of failing to do so.

Planning

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.”  Proverbs 21:5

Careful planning and disciplined execution increase the likelihood of success. Rushing ahead without preparation often leads to setbacks.

Stakeholders

“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”  Proverbs 11:14

Effective leaders seek input from others. Engaging stakeholders and subject matter experts provides perspective, reduces risk, and strengthens outcomes.

Teamwork

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!”  Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

Collaboration is essential. Strong teams support one another, overcome obstacles together, and achieve more collectively than individually.

Hard Work

“For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words.”  Ecclesiastes 5:3

Successful projects require more than ideas—they demand focused effort and disciplined execution.

Documentation

“Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.”  Habakkuk 2:2

Clear documentation ensures alignment. When expectations, goals, and plans are written plainly, teams can move forward with confidence and speed.

The Bible offers additional insights into leadership and project execution. For example, the story of Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem demonstrates strategic planning, stakeholder management, risk mitigation, and perseverance in the face of opposition. Despite intense resistance and threats, Nehemiah organized the people, assigned roles, implemented security measures, and stayed focused on the mission.

While written thousands of years ago, these principles remain surprisingly relevant. Vision, planning, budgeting, teamwork, diligence, and clear communication are timeless foundations of effective project management.
